XR 400 Direction Indicators

Post by johnnyboxer »

Direction Indicators

Anybody fitted some to a XR 400 ??

I tried to fit some today and failed

Here's how

All bolted up and connected to the existing colour coded bullet connectors in the loom

Relay already in place and switchgear present & working

Fired up the bike, both rear indicators worked when switching between right and left switch and cancel button worked

Nothing from either front indicator

Tested all bulbs and live feeds/earths etc with a meter

All tested ok

Tried a front indicator in the rear and it worked

What's wrong ?

All other lights working fine

Greetings,

Might I suggest that the earth could be different between front and rear light units

Some need an earth lead and not just earth out through their body.

Hugh.

Ps Look for my request about Serow :?

As far as I know only the Australian model came with indicators as standard, perhaps
The bullet connectors you’re using are not supposed to be used for that purpose ?

Hi Bob
Mine is a uk ED bike, not a GermN or Oz bike (with chain guard)

Has a relay already in place and indicator switch on controls
All spare wires are coded to the corresponding ones on Indicators
Front and back
As soon as I connected it all up the tell tale on dash even worked - but only rears lit up ??

Have you got a link Hugh? EDIT - seen it now - weird too

When all the wiring was connected up, only the rears lit up and flashed at double rate
Dash tell tale lit up and when I operated the switch from left to right and push to cancel all works fine with only the rears lighting up

However when I disconnected the front wires then the rears stopped working - reconnect and the rears start working

Bulbs and wiring checked on fronts with a meter and all ok

So all must work in sequence

Stumped ?

Greetings again,

How about using a 12v test lamp bulb earthed and then touched to the bulb metal bodied holder :?:

Just thought, are the correct bulbs fitted, 12v 21w, single or double contact :?:

My mistake Johnny, I can't really help you more than that.
