The brown headers on my 1200GS always annoy me. Not sure why when the bike is 12 years old and has done 62,000 miles as it's to be expected. However after noticing a video on YouTube of a lady cleaning them with some variant of Harpic toilet cleaner (Note: Tesco's own brand doesn't work at all), I thought I'd give it a go.
They're not immaculate, but it's made quite a difference, here's just one side. Before and after:

Used Harpic on my GS and Morini Scrambler headers, it really does work but be careful of getting it on alloy rims etc.

It's the Hydraulic acid.
Viakal and most other lime scale work aswell, depending on the acid content.
Use a green scourer or fine wire wool.

I use Cif Lime mousse on all my bikes
Cheaper than snowfoam and works a treat
Brings them up like new
