you will actually be putting a smaller shim in to open up the clearance, you need to get the old one out to see what will need to go back in.

Yea sorry wrong way round i understand that but is there a tolerence of when not too or is it just keep doing it till i cant get a shim small enough to do it

if you end up with one valve clearly eating its way into the seat faster than all the others, then it's time to get something done about it, as it won't settle down into normal wear.
I'd have to get me book out to see if there is a specific limit on how small you can actually go with the shims.

if you are shimming it then look for crf450 shims as they are the samr diameter 9.4mm (?) the honda one"s come in .002 increments and the yam one"s are in .005 increments, gives you more accurate valve timing. Also with both cam caps removed its possible to roll one cam on top of the other without disturbing the chain to sprocket setting as its easy to re-set it one tooth out without realizing. When you refit the cam caps tourque the bolts to 8ft/lbs rather than the 10ft/lbs stated in the manual, this reduces the chances of the rare occurrence of cam siezures,i"ve run mine like that for six years with no issues.

Didnt no that thought shims were just shims 9.48 7.98 and 10 with different clearance values in increments of 5s . Not really gonna matter to me much anyway as iam not ordering a kit as i only need the one so iam gonna go 24mx as they do individual sets of 5 for 5 quid and they just go of sizes so just gonna check the pad tomw when i get time and order a set of the 5 . Would probably help choosing crf ones thou if they come in 0.2 as its not quite 0.10 it slips and slide threw the 0.09 gauge but wont let the 0.10 in so it has to be around 0.098 if you get me as the 0.09 just slides and slips in no fuss no grabbing so the clearance id say is around 0.095 - 0.098 so i think in the 5 increments it would then put me over slightly iam gonna check again tomw when i get more and take my feeler gauges apart so i can put 2 togehter to get a better reading before ordering the shims

today i looked again at my valves and i have notoced on closer inspection that they seem to be out 1 tooth .with timing inline on the teeth the mark is slightly out of line in the hole around 10mm to left

I know i can remove tensioner and try sorting out the timing to be more presicion but can this be a sign of maybe a stretched chain or many years ago with the wr426 people began to move there timing slightly out one tooth which made the wr426 more like the yz due to giving it more response so am i looking at the engine maybe having itndone purposely or is it just way out and needs fixing cause now iam debating on wether my vlave clearances need sorting or wether the timing is just out one tooth making it to tight on the one valve . I guess if i put it back it could be 4 valves to tight and one ok or 4 to slack and one ok . Just wondering why it would be like this and if its been done purposely or if they have just done a major error on the rebuild on the top end
