Made redundant go buy a F800GS! Initial thoughts

Post by adventure steele »

Hey everyone so it finally happened Back on a BMW Chose an F800GS this time around seems to be the perfect compromise for me bike wise everything I loved about the 1200 without all the stuff that drove me banannas an as a huge + can actually put my feet down. To be honest though after just pulling out of Jeffries on it instantly I knew I'd found the right match bike wise.

Steve from Alan Jeffries sorted me out with an absolute cracker.

After doing 2,000 miles on the RD250LC over the past month (1500 i one week) The F800GS feels like pure silk and smoothness when the vibes kick in they are nice which is good.

Sure does hustle along was kitting the same braking points as I do on my 250lc which is asking a bit for any bike.

Not really experiencing any of the sloshing on the fuel tank which I read about on the ADV version so happy there brimmed it before we went up the peak district. Forks feel well damped and controlled. (don't forget my current bikes been a rd250lc) Do I miss the Dynamic ESA from my 1200 LC GSA not one bit very happy with predicable handling.

Gearbox feels slick and smooth.

engine makes weird and wonderfull noise haha but doesn't bother me :)

Only things I wanna sort an they are small things is a longer gearshift lever for my Alpinestars, Bigger screen with bar for a 4 button Nav mount for my Nav 5.

Been thinking about a ADV 800 Screen setup currently to get some cleaner air joys of being tall haha.

Really liking the Vario setup to.
so just wanna say thanks to everyone for all the advice.

As a few of you know I've been in print for a few years well pretty much since I was a kid an due to redundancy with the company shutting I'm outta a job really life changing and not sure what I'd like to do next so gonna have some adventures on the 800.

Cornwall in a few weeks
Northcoast 500 after that and eventually Iceland.

Even been considering splitting my week with part time work and the rest adventure riding if some perm work doesn't come up soon really is a life changing moment

For the next week though gonna try film some footage of some back road areas in the peak district.

Few rubbish mobile pictures from today was totally worn out by the time we pulled up for a drink

Think the umber one thing I wanna sort is the front screen :) with some sort of nav mount for the Nav V

Hope this helps anyone thinking of the F800GS get a testride on one for sure

If you can afford to run and ride the LC and GS without having a job then I would say stick with what you're doing ; )

Haha savings mate pretty depleted now lol but the 800 was to good to pass up was working 70+ hour weeks before the company went under ran a digital print department an ended up having to jump on a Heidelberg xl75 + doing impo's back in pre press and helping with the MIS systems hopefully something turns up soon :) Not sure if I'll go back into print hard to see a future for the UK industry with everything being printed abroad

My travel mate is looking at that F800 too, same GS and figures its for him too. He has a few bikes, on the road a BMW K1 and a Ducati ST2, off the road he has a BMW K100LT and K1100RS and is struggling to find a long distance mile munching bike as the more comfortable K100LT is off the road temporarily as he is redoing the cosmetics. So he decided the K1 and Ducati might go and be replaced by the same F800. Very impressive bike without the weight. Experience suggests too that the resale on the F800 is very good.
1992 K100LT June 2010 110,000 miles
1984 K100RT July 2013 36,000 miles, 90,000
1983 K100RS Nov 2018 29,000 miles, 58,600 miles
1996 K1100LT Oct 2020 37,990 miles, 48,990 miles
1984 K100 Sprint March 2023 58,000 miles, 62,000 miles

I'd agree the resale looks really good on them :) I'm loving mine so far the only things that need doing are the usual, screen, nav mount, seat. joys of being tall haha.
Apart from that I'm over the moon just got a Wunderlich Vario Splitter to try on top of the screen while I decide what to do regarding nav mount wise as thats gonna effect what screen I put on .
