The original Sportster was made in an off road style in addition to the roadster. They were desert racers more than green lanes much in the style of the current Scramblers. I had a 1959 XLCH some years ago.

Unlike a lot of people I have nothing against Harley, they build some great bikes. However, they should stick to what they're good at, that thing looks awful

Personally I don't think Harley's bike looks any worse than the majority of the current big adventure bikes and is probably lighter than many of them. They did do the Buell Ulysses a few years ago, which in many ways was similar to the CCM GP 450, it was a clever design with some good features let down by cost cutting and poor finish. The owners I spoke to said they were great when they were not breaking down. Good to see that Harley are finally bringing out the live wire as it is a shame that more main stream manufacturers have not gone down the electric route yet.
Whilst I can't see myself owning a Harley there are owners who take them great distances and on dirt roads e.g. Ian Mutch and Dave Barr, which I suppose shows that it is not the bike that makes the adventure.
Cheers Jak

Good luck to them, I often wonder why the USA doesn't have a bike maker that makes sports/trail/adv bikes.

The ADV thing brings to mind an Alien robot laser tank but I bet it soaks up the road miles pretty well. It's going to be even harder to pick up than a GS though.
And now, Harry, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.

There used to be an American MX/trail bike manufacturer called Highland: seems like they ceased production a few years ago.

Years ago, the far East gave us the UJM - the Universal Japanese Motorcycle.

Now, Harley-Davidson gives us the UMF - the Ugly Mother...

Is that seriously how they routed the exhaust??

I'd have that smashed off within half an hour.

Highland comes from Sweden as far as I can recall ..... two Husaberg cylinders matched up.

Exhaust routing is indeed goofy
