Plenty of relevant info here, all I'll add is that the subframe cracks at the front top mount because of the countersunk screws, they really all do it and I'm sure it's not helped by an extrusion line in the tube.
I loved the power output of my RFS 450 though, I sometimes dropped into river bottoms or ditches in too high a gear and I was convinced the motor had stalled but it'd still pull out in the wrong gear then rev out to an almost MX top end, easy to loft the front wheel over obstacles too. The 400 is a bit anemic that way but the linear output doesn't catch you out.
The 525 is like a combination of the 400 and 450 but more power all over.

Re: 2005 ktm 525 exc opinions
I love mine, sure there's newer better bikes out there, but I've got to know the 525 over the years of ownership, very easy to work on, mines an 07 so the last of the RFS, the power delivery is really smooth, bit like the older 400s but a lot more torque, mines geared up for road and trail ATM with 14/48 set upthe last trip I went on was 2000kms and held it's own with the 3 690s on the trip.
11 years old, would I swap it for a newer exc, nope.
