Post by johnnyboxer »

Any good?

Much to look out for in terms of problems?

Looking for something for the trails, with electric start

The problem with this generation of EXC is they are the ones with the separate engine/gearbox oil and it is said that those oils come together and this is a problem with and 08 to 11 EXCs,they are not held in as high regard as the earlier RFC engined or the later FI ones, having said that I had a an 11 400 EXC which ran without problem to 15,000 miles when I sold it.

So that would be a XC4 (08-11 bike) engine

Sounds good, found a 50 hour bike which interests me

KTM build quality was pretty good on that range. That bike specifically yes oil migration happened on a few but its not a widespread fault and can be converted to a single sump if needed. When you look at it insist on a cold engine start on the button, if it wont quite fire but will on the kicker then the torque limiter has weakened, its an easy fix but a good bargaining point. Check for subframe cracks at the mounting bolts, dirt tricks cam chain tensioner is a good thing, check for mangled sump bolts as that can be a pain to fix. Other than that the usual stuff and they are very easy to work on. I prefer them to the 450 which always seems snatchy to me.

I had an '08 450 EXC-R with the XC4 engine for 5 years and I didn't have any problems at all. Cracking bike, imho, and much better than the 400 that I had before (good as that was). I put a steering damping on it as the front can be a bit twitchy at speed. A super easy bike to ride fast on the trails 8-) . I've also ridden the 530 and it feels slightly lazier, if that makes sense, and somehow feels bigger...even though it isn't.

Blimey. You don't see 7 year old dirt bikes looking like that very often.

That's one bike that badly needs some mud throwing at it.

I might have some spare plastics bits for one of them.
I’ll have a look later if they’re any use.
Probably not a clean as those though.
