Am i being dim (quite possibly) - using a smaller sprocket on the back would increase the speed in first not reduce it wouldn’t it. Certainly works that way on my mountain bike?

Yes you are correct, just a way of wording.

Gear lower on the back means adding a tooth or several on the rear sprocket....

Yup, that's what I meant, one tooth more on the back makes the gearing slightly lower, 1 tooth off the front is way to much.
I found the gearing Ok for most trails in our area but some of them are steep rocky climbs so you need to trials ride them, sort of ;)

So I’m about to have another gripe of this bikes unreliability.

My clutch started slipping again. I replaced the springs a few months ago when it was slipping before which cured the problem

My clutch plates tolerance is greater than 2.5 they are 2.67

The springs are tone within 31.5 and 33mm in length and are 32.56mm

So all good, Facebook is recommending that an additional steel plate is added to fix the clutch slip.

Anyone done anything like this before?

The only telling sign is black plates in the centre. Like they are overheating

Yes they are the only sign of wear is paint rub.

I’ve stumped up reluctantly for a full ebc kit, but I’m confused to how this will fix it as everything is within tolerance..

It could be just cheap crap installed by Husky. It wouldn’t surprise me so far the clutch is by far the weakest component on the bike

I had clutch wear problems on my crf250l.
I changed the plates/discs Twice and had HD springs.
The Honda recommended oil also, and changed more than spec.

The problem turned out to be the rear tyre rubbing the back of the front of the swing arm.
This was due to having an oversize tyre.
It could not be detected when cold but when the tyre warmed up it was like an inch bigger on diameter.

So maybe check if any items are within an inch of the rear tyre?

But if this is a common problem it may be worth fitting an extra steel plate as suggested on fb.

My clutch plates were black from front to back. suggesting an even resistance externally but yours are black just in the middle suggesting that the plates are not clamping down completely and slipping at the weakest mid point?
