I thought this might be of interest to some of you. I am in the market for a new bike and spied a lovely example of a 2010 BMW F800GS for sale from a dealer in Manchester but with extremely high miles (63,000) but priced with this in mind at £3,691.00.

So I phoned the dealer to ask a few details about the bike, the usual things, service history, any accident damage, MOT due, any advisories etc.... turns out there is no history with the bike what so ever and it is in the dealers opinion that at some point the Speedometer has been changed as the MOT status goes form 6,000 (in 2015) to 62,000 (in November 2017) with no MOT in 2016 and no record of its first one in 2014. For me, I am walking away however, the condition is absolutely fantastic, no rust, the paint isn't peeling off the oil cooler as it usually does after 15,000 miles on these, the headers are in great condition too. I genuinely think that this is a 10,000 mile bike but with no history. For me its not worth the risk however, for somebody else this risk could be the cheapest and cleanest F800GS available on the market currently. Dealer is forced to price with the "assumed" mileage in mind.

Going from the pictures, it is the ABS model and with heated grips, full vario pannier system and what looks like a fairly new chain too.

P.S I do not work for the superbike factory, I was just an interested potential buyer but not willing to take the risk (I live in Aberdeen, so its not like I can just nip back to the dealer)

Surely a dealer can look up the MOT status as it is all electronic these days?

As for the speedometer reading: it could be that the original malfunctioned and the previous owner couldn't afford the price of a new one so replaced it with one that they bought cheap off eBay without realising that it may impact the resale value... or maybe they did a really big trip in between the two present MOTs, meaning that they were out of the country for a year or so.

The dealer has the same access to the MOT status as we do these days, all MOTs can viewed through the DVSA website, whether in the trade or not.

I thought about whether it had been away in between MOTs but surely the bike would be showing those miles if it had indeed covered 60,000 miles in the two years?

It would appear on the face if it to be a very clean example, so could be a bargain for someone willing to take a punt.

Had similar issue on mine. Instrument panel/computer was stolen so replaced with scrapped one, thinking it could be reprogrammed to the ECU mileage. After lots of frustrating trips and calls to dealers - eventually put in an insurance claim for new £800 replacement unit from BMW. They then link new "blank" speedo to bike. ABS started working and odometer mileage now accurate, but the MOT mileage was out of kilter!

looks a good deal.if I were in the market for an 800 I would either take dealer finance or pay with a credit card.that way you have some recourse if there was a problem.

At that price I don't think there's a huge amount to lose, at worst you break it and sell the bits.
If it's mileage is genuine then it's been well looked after so again I'd still think it was worth looking at.

If you go to the dealers ask to see paperwork, take note of last keeker on V5 and see if they are ex directory, give them a call and ask

I have friends who have bought from them. No issues and a positive experience. Will not haggle on price.

It may have been taken and stored abroad to use during the Summer months hence the lack of MOT you mention.
