Currently in the process of putting together a ghetto build ebike - hub motor kit from ebay for £300 (I think, had it in the shed for a while in the 'pending projects' pile ) and a late 90s Specialized Ground Control FSR that I've just picked up (also from fleabay) for £50...
Will post up some pics when it's done, just scratching my head over battery location ATM
The next step....

Tie it on with tape or zip ties until you find the best location. I'd bet on seat post for "mass centralization"andrew882 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 18, 2018 11:16 am Currently in the process of putting together a ghetto build ebike - hub motor kit from ebay for £300 (I think, had it in the shed for a while in the 'pending projects' pile ) and a late 90s Specialized Ground Control FSR that I've just picked up (also from fleabay) for £50...

Re: The next step....
These high powered electric bikes aren't something I'm interested in.
They are essentially electric motorbikes.
In Britain they bring complications with their legality.....I wouldn't want to either ride one illegally or get one registered, taxed and insured, then be classed as a motor vehicle and be exempt from cycleways, paths canals etc....
It wouldn't take long for irresponsible types (I'd probably be one of them actually!) to selfishly spoil the whole ebike-thing by razzing up and down bridleways on a 35mph silent electric motorbike.
I think the crank-assisted bikes with their 15mph assistance cut-off is perfect for the UK.
The line between electric cycles and electric motorbikes can be a bit blurred, believe me if you've never ridden a legal ebike they are great fun.
I'm sure an electric motorbike is great fun as well.....if you've got a private 200 acre estate to play on.

Well whatever next, maybe an internal combustion engine ...
Good idea though!

Re: The next step....
So here's "GhettoLec 1.0". Took a bit of modification to the pedal sensor mounts and the battery mount bracket (which is still too close to the chainrings for my liking and right in the line of fire come my first proper jaunt off road) , but it's alive!
Still to tidy up wiring and beef up a couple of brackets, but she'll do until I can find a smaller battery I can mount elsewhere
Took it out for a run at the weekend along the Brampton Valley Way and had a hoot.....
Not a bad start for sub £400 all in, I reckon.

Re: The next step....
Great stuff.
Could you list what you have used as I have an old MTB I wouldn’t mind converting?
Cheers

Re: The next step....
Well done. I know making prototypes is not easy so this is a good effort
The brakes worry me a bit From what I've seen eMTB's have disk brakes, and hydraulic ones at that, to cope with the extra weight and speed.
Could do with a wash too
