Experience and reading surfaces counts for so much. What you might avoid on a good day, the gravel on the side of the road, is your chosen track on an icy morning when the wheel lines are iced over. Frost four mornings last week, took the bike out on all of them.

But many years back smaller lighter bikes we took them out on ice and snow skating them around the place for fun and learning. We did the same in cars and its invaluable experience. So too is slowing as you approach a roundabout so the traffic slows with you reduces risk of being rear ended.

The one thing I have always found is having a seat height that allows you some control helps confidence. Having said that I know q few guys on 28" leg and riding tall bikes without a bother. That's not for me though.
