Maybe ABR could do some investigation into this? If there is an issue here, people need to know?

Quite worrying if you own one I would think?

Of course he crashed, anybody would crash riding a bike with the wheels so badly out of line. Does nobody ever check wheel alignment these days.

Super heavy bike + luggage + rider + very rough terrain = parts failure.
Edit should also add time to the above as well.
Just a layman's view

There's a picture on the advrider thread abut the subject of the front wheel that had about a foot long flat spot from an impact prior to the forks giving in.
I think severe off road use is causing it. Though that's not to deny a 'problem'. Maybe it's the inevitably of asking a bike to be all things to all men.
Currently on mine heading to Iceland so its made me wary, but realistically I know I shouldn't be.
And don't expect any magazine to investigate it. They'll never bite the hand that feeds them.

I suppose not really the same, but kind of, enduros/MX bikes can take big hits based on the design remit.

Normally when I have a big hit on the above bikes, on the front and due to stupidity, I go over the bars and the forks stay intact after bottoming out

Has shock travelled on through after bottoming?....or is the design faulty ?....would the rim not have dinged more first?

If you close your eyes you can imagine this as a GS650......the lighter of the GS range.

Anyhooooo.....if you take a hit out of the equation I wonder do they break with simple jumping?

PS I love how there's a big skid in the pic :)

I think it's just a poor bike for those sort of conditions, way too heavy to go slow without deflecting off rocks or simply stopping, yet if you use enough speed it's mass assures the chassis is overwhelmed.
I am sure BMW will bring up some sort of extreme use clause.
Glad the bloke is ok.

let's face facts, it's a heavy road bike being sold as an off road bike.
Nobody would be surprised if a Hardly Rideable or Pan European failed under that use, why be surprised about the GS?
The BMW marketing machine has a lot to answer for IMO.
