As all above say they have covered the main 3 there, the V-strom the Versys and the CB500x, Despite always wanting a v-strom i think i would go for the cb500x.

Should meet all your needs especially on the used front.

If you're down grading £6K sounds a lot to me.

TDM900 will do everything for around £2K - even some light dry trails.
Build quality is excellent, engine well proved.

+2 For the Honda CB500X

Takes me to work every day (29 miles each way) and has never missed a beat in the last 18 months.

I bought it new with racks, top box, panniers + centre stand (all free as they were trying to shiftg the 2014MY bikes in mid 2015)

If you want to downgrade and save money a NC700 commuting/touring no problem, 80 mpg. Winter rallies fine as used ones with 10/15k below 3 grand now means it is the perfect winter bike.

Another vote for a TDM900, I owned one for a few years, absolutely loved it,a superb machine, brilliant all-rounder and tourer.

Probably the best bike I've ever owned..... period!

Loved mine. Did 2 up trips to France and the Pyrenees on it. Will certainly have another one before I get too decrepit to ride.

I had a cb500x for about 18 months, it carted me and the Mrs about with camping stuff and would cruise at 85 doing it, kept up with sports bikes when it got twisty even 2 up, it was great going to work and never let me down.

The givi high screen is amazing, I could sit with my visor open at 85 and helped the fuel economy.

The only problems I had with it were the seat was a bit shit, the stock suspension is pretty hard, it was a pain to change the plugs on and similar to my CBF500 I had I'd describe it as competent. It was competent at whatever you wanted it to do, withing reason, but it wasn't the bike I chose to get out of the garage for fun, that was the dominator.

All in all if I could've afforded to keep it and run my van I would've done, if I would've had to go back to just having one bike and no van then I would've kept it, and I do miss it and if I could pick one up cheap I would but I'm not exactly killing myself trying to get another one.

They're very good bikes but not for everyone.
