I would say an xr250 air cooled less maintenence and cheap as chips to buy leaving loads of money for safari tanks etc ...watched a video on you tube once about a guy that did one if you can stand the guy and have time give it a watch he explains a bit

I had similar needs and ended up with a ccm 404. Good light chassis with drz 400 engine . It's done everything from motorway to mud bath bogs. I've been out with the 2 stroke enduro boys and toured holland, Belgium n France on it . Done all that without complaint and cheap to buy

@tramp...it is indeed me from xrv.org.uk.....back when i had the transalp those were good times on a good forum :0

Maybe a bit curve ball but check out the spec of a WK400 trail, not readily available in the UK new at the moment but in France they they have Mash Adventure 400, same bike .......may tick all your box's
