Go on, I'm a numpty - what did they do in 2014 to improve it? I'd previously been told that 2010 bikes were the best - better quality components.

I thought long and hard about one a couple of years back but opted for the X Challenge - slightly taller seat, and I didn't need the full power of the KTM. But when I see them out I still think they look fab.

Twin Spark head.
ABS (Not for all but switchable to have front only) I like it.
Extra oil ways in the head and gearbox.
Now 690cc (old ones were 652cc)
Better support for exhaust (can be fitted retro)
Suspension appears to work better from standard.
Ride by wire throttle.
Oil pressure warning light. (Although this was fitted to 2012 on bikes)

All the above results in a smoother running engine with better Torque and more power if you want it. It also has a better throttle response.

It probably doesn't sound a lot but when riding them back to back the differences are very noticeable.

The 2010 bikes as far as i'm aware were the same as the 2008 - 2011. The only difference was between the E model and the R. The R had worse lights, smaller speedo unit but 25mm more suspension travel. Oh and an orange frame.

I had a quick second ride on my new to me 2014 690 this morning and remarked to my wife when I got back how precise the throttle is so thanks for the confirmation. :)
Not had a chance to trail ride it yet and I think it's on the 'normal' setting. It zips along brilliantly and shows I was overbiked for the roads I now ride on my old 950SM.

I'm really looking forward to my future riding on it.

But I wish I had known about the discounts :(
