XS1100 Midnight Special

Post by Billy Bananahead »

I've been getting this old '81 XS1100 MNS roadworthy, and today took it up the road to see how it handles after new tyres, shocks and fork re-furb including re-chrome.
It handles well compared to how it was when I got it a few months back despite the 16" rear wheel and 19" front but still needs a bit of work in the fuelling department. Still a few blemishes to the paintwork here and there but i'm quite chuffed. This is my fourth XS1100 but my first Midnight. I've changed the pull back 'bars for Renthals and de-linked the brakes so the front m/c works the front calipers and the rear the rear only.

Nice and a bit of useless info I believe they were launched at the same time as the SR500....my brain is mostly full of crap

Quite possibly :) They share lots of common components too when you start to look closely. The SR front wheel for example can take another disc and the callipers are identical as is switchgear, pegs, indicators, etc. Think they did a Martini version too?

The UK spec XS11's share common parts with the SR but the Midnight Special LH, which this is, is a US import and shares more parts with the XJ1100 which is a US/Canada only job.
Yes, they did a Martini version, with a big f'off fairing. They are rare now. I think Mike Hailwood rode one for some promotion.

You mean a Special not Express. And was it a Midnight or was it an S?
There are 15 variants. Got any pictures?
