Finally got round to the rear bearings this morning, popped to Halfords to get a 33mm impact socket to drift in the bearing


Rear bearings I used were SKF 6005-2RSH and new oil seals 35x47x7 due to the originals being damaged

Straightforward job rear wheel off

remove spacers, oils seals, lever inner spacer to one side to get a visible lip on one bearing then either use a long drift punch or old socket extension bar and hammer even hits around in a circle to remove said bearing, the inner spacer will fall out then turn wheel to remove the other bearing

I did have the new bearings in the freezer for 30 mins just to assist the installation, lightly grease bearing hosing then using the 33mm impact socket hammer evenly the new bearing in listening for the sound to change that denotes now seated...……..turn over wheel ensuing inner spacer is placed in hub and install second bearing, just before seating line up inner spacer

Once bearing are in lightly grease the remaing bearing housing and the new oil seals and push home, new seals may need a rubber hammer to gently persuade then to go in ........clean up then re install wheel......lovely then put kettle on

You'll be amazed at the difference they make off-tarmac.

The best single modification you can make to any trail bike is to choose an appropriate set of tyres.

Have you got rim locks?

If so, don't be afraid to lower the tyre pressures on soft/slippery ground (you can go down to 10 - 15 psi), but bear in mind this does make the tubes more vulnerable to pinch-punctures and the rims more likely to get dinged on rocky going.

Thanks for the advice Richard, yes it has rim locks as standard. Apparently tripped up the bloke who fitted the new tyres though, the back went flat on me on a tight up hill bend the other day - took the back wheel back in and the guy said he'd caught the inner tube on the rim lock. All good now though.

That wheel bearing break down is such good timing Netsonic, thanks! When I had the back wheel off I thought the rear bearings felt a bit grindy, like the wheel isn't turning smoothly on them. I'm thinking about having a go at doing that job myself. I knew getting this bike would mean I'd be learning more more about bike mechanics than I currently know so this might be a good place to start learning!

and today I be mostly fork oiling...……..

I did the fork oil way back in December 2017 , I had the customary knocking and what came out then was horrible, black slurry which stunk. I measured each fork oil volume that came out and had 460ml in each. Based on some research this was assumed too much so went for 360ml which just covered the top of the damper. The result was great, smoother ride no knocking...…... result...….

as I have recently noticed a decline in the smoothness of the forks after around 3000 miles I would do another fork service

again today what came out was grim and this time I did a bit more of a clean and flush, again went for my new baseline of 360ml each leg using standard 5w fork oil. I think as I did a more thorough clean and drain 360ml in the right fork didn't quite cover the damper so have used 370ml in the left and 380ml in the right and will report back once tested

Went out on.mine saturday on very dry trails.
I mentioned before about it may be.for.sale, well took the decision to put him up for sale.
Have my EXC back and.running now for the trails and no desire to travel abroad on a bike this year.
Someone has enquired via a PM. On phone so couldn't post a.mileage pic so hope it gets picked up here

Just got back from Sweet Lamb, beginners off road training weekend with Nathan Millward, training by Mark Molineux and his team.The place is amazing, the group was great, the trainers were fantastic and best of all the bike did brilliantly. I spent a lot of time saying into my helmet "trust the bike, trust the bike". I did and she didn't let me down. Any and all difficulties were entirely due to user error
