Yamaha MT09

Post by SteveW » Fri Sep 30, 2016 2:39 pm

I bought an MT09 Yamaha a couple of weeks ago. I always do things arse-about, so I've just read some revues on it today!
I'd agree the suspension is a bit crude....may be I'll do something about this, but it ain't a cheap fix we're looking at £1200+
The low speed fuelling isn't great, but I can live with that.
The brakes come in for some criticism, but it's the first bike l've ridden for ages that has proper road rubber on, rather than knobblies or duel purpose tyres, so I think it stops brilliantly, so much grip between tyre and Tarmac

.
I really think I could do a long road trip on it, the lack of weather protection is potentially an issue, but it does stop you constantly hitting silly motorway speeds.....and I do like less cosseted and more connected feel of a naked bike on A and B roads.
But the engine is fantastic....much stronger than a Triumph 800 triple.
I'd say the Tracer version of this bike, more sitty-uppy with a decent top fairing would be a real great touring bike.

Very nice. B) B) B)

I went and had a look at the xsr900 last week which is effectively the same bike but with some "retro" styling...and more or less fell in love with it. Very very tempted!

out of curiosity, what made you go with the "street rally" version rather than the standard mt09?

My mate has just traded his in and he also said that the suspension let it down a bit with it's harshness also he found himself sliding forward on the seat a bit so put an aftermarket one on which made it more comfortable,he said the engine was a peach. He didn't trade it in because he didn't like it but just had an offer he couldn't refuse on a 1200gs.

Even though the bike is a "64" plate it only had 237 miles on it and was sat there looking at me and the price was right. It was from a Yamaha main dealer and it was their demo, but the newer model has improved suspension so I think they put punters on their other demo.....a newer one with the better suspension to try and get them on the hook.
I'am King of the impulse-purchase by the way.
I had a GS800 and a GSA800, I traded my GS800 in for it and they gave me about £500 more than I expected.....I suspect they just wanted rid of it.

Haha.... I though you'd be saying "Nice bike, but your flags need re-pointing"
Yep, the Tracer has to be a good buy.

You mean 'stronger' than the 800 engine in the Tiger? Good comparison ;)

I haven't ridden any of the MT range but having sat on them at length  my own opinion is that the MT07 Tracer is more comfy than the MT09 Tracer. As for the MT10, then they don't do a Tracer version but that's the one that get's my vote (158bhp) (thumbs) .
