Ginger,
I think you made the right decision personally, be patient and the right bike will turn up. A sub 10k bike should be around £2-2.5k, the age doesn't matter its the condition and the tell tale signs of abuse that count. The 'S' model is a very capable bike and if you wanted a bit more grunt can be converted to an 'FCR' carb from the stock BS, even changing the cams is simple enough. As I said earlier converting it to what you want is easy and plenty of parts available, the CRF-L can't do that without spending serious money and in which case you may as well have bought the CRF-X anyway IMO

here is nice comparison between DRZ qnd wr250l so you can get an idea as wr250r is generally better bike then crf250l.

Another one for the DRZ I'm afraid. It does everything you will want, that's why 14 years or so later they still command such good prices and are so popular. Just sold mine on this forum and already regretting it but other itches need scratching !

A drz will completely smoke a crf off and on road. Even though the drz is heavy in comparison to an enduro bike, it has similar ground clearance- about 55mm more than the Honda with better stock suspension. It,s just a pity they're getting on now but 2nd hand value seems to be rising.

Re: Which to go for; CRF250L or DRZ400S
I have recently considered those to. I tried the CRF259L it had all the mods done and was quite nice to ride but the acceleration was a little on the weak side for my liking and I though the was a chance of getting bored easily. In the end I took a slightly different approach and got a CCM 404 of a forum member on here. The CCM has the drz400E motor and fcr carb , WP suspension and brembo brakes so a nice package.
I'm about to set off to hull in a few hours to trail ride it up through Sweden ,to the north cape then round Europe-
