ever just buy a money pit bike? (R100GSP/D)

Post by scubabiker »

so ive owned my GS for over a year an a half, ive done some serious distance on it and taken it all over the place, but it just seems to me to be a money pit, i spent about 4k on the bike (typical norwegian price) then did loads of work: remade the pannier racks, waterproofed the panniers, changed the rear tyre, big service, new battery, new brake pads front, bulbs here and there etc etc...
then the general maintenance has just really started to add up, plus i have had a number of problems,
the tyres wore out really fast, changed the rear 2 times and front once, the airbox keeps filling with water somehow, had ice in there all winter and even had a frozen float!
now i just changed tyre again and when fitting the rear wheel, the brake shoe fell apart, ordered a new one SBS and then it got lost in the mail and i waited for about 4 weeks!, go to fit them and cant get the wheel on, its like the bloody hub has shrunk, which explains why i snapped part of the old brake shoe!
not to mention the fact ive changed every cable, part of the clutch mechanism, starter motor and the switch gear....
then theres my old honda, its a 1984 VF750 that had 2 loose timing chains, i payed about 500 quid for it and its been faultless, even took it to italy, rode it through winter, its just a great bike and never asks for anything...
anyone else just had a bike thats a total money pit?

I feel your pain. I've not long been rinding and am not an experienced bike mechanic and as such find it hard to spot issues when buying. My current bike in the last year has had top and bottom engine rebuilds and steering bearings. On top of that I've upgraded and farkled it to death.

It's got this year to prove itself as reliable. If it fails I'm buying a new bike from a dealer.
And now, Harry, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.

You mean like my funduro? That has had countless work done to it, still blew it's regulator a day before my trip and 5 days into the trip has decided to blow both tyre valves and left me with a bike with 2 flat tyres on a petrol station car park? Haha

(this situation it being remedied in the morning)

I think you've answered your own question.

I've had my R100GS for 26 years, many other bikes have been and gone in the meantime but I've never owned a Honda.

Whoops, that's not quite true I once had a CD175 basket case which I sold in the same basket.

the thing is im a qualified motorcycle mechanic (and have worked for top fuel!), its not like im bad on maintenance or even bought a bad bike, its just had so many issues! ive just finally got the hweel on, ended up taking the whole brake arm off and relocating it to get the right amount of slack (all of the slack i could get!).
next problem is new mirror, new brake switch (again!) and new choke cables (might get the lifty kit thing from motorworks)
it started first press of the button after beind stood since december, which is a good thing....
not ridden it today as my back is too painful to even try....
