I think a lot of these old dual sport bikes are well overpriced, but some mugs seem to be happy to pay it.
They're the motorcycle equivalent of the emperors new clothes... and when people start realising that and the bottom drops out the market for em, as it surely will sometime, those who bought just before that happens will be left with a money loser.

They didn't sell well when they were new because 'adventure' bikes hadn't become trendy in the UK yet, and everyone then wanted a FireBlade or similar.
And then many of the ones that had sold were broken up fairly early in their lives because people wanted the engines for Sound of Singles road-racing.
I suspect there's more in France where big trail bikes were always popular.

Most in the UK are imports. I couldn't afford one back in 1988 so bought the 600 instead. Like you so rightly say, we were not ready for these bikes (I was) back then so the majority of sales were in Europe.
