Thanks for the replies. I'm now the very happy owner of this Triple Black (thumbs)
To be honest the bike is in phenomenal condition - apart from some minor scuffs on the engine bars and Barkbusters (from an obviously slow speed drop) the bike is mint - no peeling paint, no rust, spotless.
Added bonus was the extras that the seller hadn't listed or didn't know about - the comfort package installed at original purchase, the AS bash plate, AS engine bars and the Scottoiler.
All for the bargain price of £5,500 (go on, define 'bargain') - given that the original owner paid £9,300 for it less than three years ago I'm a very, very happy bunny.

I reckon a bargain is something that you buy for a price that you are more than happy with.
What everyone else think of what you paid has no relevance at all, me included of course.
Go ride, enjoy and enjoy some more.
There is nothing currently on the market that I would change my 800GS for.

Some people have had very little problems on their bikes, others have had misery. Early bikes were specified by accountants rather than engineers. Some components really budget.
Have a look at particular at WARNINGS AND RECALLS on this index thread on UKGSer
On the other hand the engine is superb, fuel consumption brilliant and gearbox smooth, albeit ratios are from the 800S and 800ST so too close ratio for dual purpose.

Now you have a great bike. JUST NAIL IT.
They work well with TKC tyres.
A nice light muffler saves a lot of high up weight. Also saves an expensive muffler if you dump the bike. (thumbs)
Fuel muffler works fine.
