Sold my F800GS to a bloke from Estonia

Post by jayson »

So bit of advice wanted.

I put my bike on eBay, a chap with East European accent rings me asks me for best price, we do a deal on the phone, he then says he is exporting bike to Estonia.

I say ok, but cleared funds first.

So same day he pays me £500 bank transfer from uk account, and rest is coming from Estonia, alarm bells ring at this point, so I say I won't even give my address till after funds cleared.

Two days later funds arrived from Estonia, I ring the bank and they are happy. I explain selling bike to Estonia, they ask me to confirm name sending it.

So today I have all the money cleared in my bank, and I gave him the bike.

Surely nothing can go wrong.........

Normally you should be good with bank transfers unlike PayPal where all sorts of charge backs can happen. As long as your bank tell you the money is 100% safely in your account and can't be bounced then I'd be happy with that.
Boo :-p

I would transfer the funds or get the cash out now to prevent any charge pull back, spoke to my sister (manager at barclays) even with bank drafts in certain circumstances esp with checks and it has cleared the funds have been retrieved, so get the dish out in your hot little stickies

Smart move (thumbs)

Send the sold bit of the V5 asap & ensure you tell the insurance company. You don't want any come-back if some plonker is riding it uninsured

If the bank say it was ok then hopefully they won't go back on that. Bankers, after all, are honourable people...

I would trust a guy from Estonia paying the money more, than some chav from midlands bringing in "hard earned" cash

There are many dealers in Baltics who buy and sell bikes and it is really easy to open a bank account here in UK, for small transactions.
