what is really the best dual sport bike (not 1000cc+ bikes) ???

Post by johnzxr750 » Tue May 27, 2014 7:05 pm

Well after a small chat on whats app with lonepilgrim this afternoon it got me thinking..... i know steady! Anyways we're not talking ktm 990,gsa12 or explorers xc here. Im thinking singles twins triples even 4's mid range shenanagins that can be used to munch up miles at a decent speed and also handle some cornering and also cope happily with the likes of strata florida the fosse way.....so i personally have a tigger955i &a 650 funduro.so if i was going to have this kinda bike to do this im thinking kle500 jacked at the back with klr650 or ktm forks and youve gor a great bike to do this. So boys n girls what and why please
cheers j

I do like my little vara- In all it's underpowered, overweight glory!
'05 Silver 125 Varadero- the sensible solution

'13 990 Adventure R- gone but not forgotten

'04 Silver Varadero 125- Sold

'07 XR 125- Killed and PX'd

A dual sport will be a compromise somewhere. B)
The only one that I personally Know about is the CCM 644 although I suspect the KTM 690 is somewhat similar.
For the Fosse Way or Strata Florida which are not particularly technical or difficult I'd give it 8/10 because of it's light weight @ 137 kilos.
For M way cruising I'd give it 7/10 for it's very capable speed, acceleration, brakes & range of 150 miles. As a big single it will tire the rider quicker than a multi unless of course you're an out & out ThumperHolick
Lightness is everything.

My Tenere but it's as far away from being a stock bike as it's possible to get (thumbs)

Quite fond of my 2 grands worth of tidy TTR 600 myself
Cheap enough to take few off road risks, good enough to do a decent milage on :)

(Oops sorry, I've just read it's not 1000cc bikes, sorry).

Owned my Suzuki V-Strom DL1000 for close to 6yrs now, after a few slight tweaks here and there it's a great all rounder, ticks all the boxes. I've both brake lines replaced - TRE fitted - ScottOiler - 2 tooth more rear sprocket - slightly lowered front forks for quicker/faster steering, fabulous. You can pick up the likes of a 03/04 model for not big money.

Probably outta date now with the newer stuff coming out over past few years with the likes of traction control/selection of different riding modes/fly by wire etc, but the DL thou is pretty dam good for the money. I love mine.

Depends on which side of the line you want to make the compromise.

I love both my KTM 690 and my R100GS but I wouldn't want to be on a motorway on the KTM and I wouldn't want to be on an enduro course on the GS.

My list:

1. Honda XR650.

2. KLR 650

3. KTM 690 Enduro R

Probably a 70% off-road 30% on road bias from me though.
