New BMW water pumper

Just been reading the writeup on the new GS and I can't help wondering why they're putting a chrome exhaust systems on it - surely people went off these on big expensive bikes as it's not generally long before the gravel and salt combine to make holes. My Pan Euro has a stainless exhaust system which is only let down by mild steel bolts which have to be undone to change the back tyre but at least the main system shows no signs of needing replacement after 8 years and 60,000 miles.

Is this why Akropovic et al manage to make a decent living because the manufacturers leave the door wide open? Wouldn't the rest of you prefer an exhaust on a £14k bike that would last the life of the rest of the components?
