I owned a CBF600 SA for 2 yrs (from 08-10)
The 2008 model was a complete revamp of previous versions so think about this when browsing. The new model offered:
- a better performing engine (76bhp)
- much lighter thanks to an aluminium frame
- very comfortable (adjustable seat - the lowest being 780mm - I'm 5' 2")
I had the ABS model and never had a single issue with the bike.
In 2 yrs, I covered 23k.

If you want a spirited ride, you have to keep the revs up, and there's not much engine braking. My previous background was v-twin's so this was a shock to me.

Nevertheless, I liked the CBF so much, I upgraded to the CBF1000.
The 1000 is heavier but there's not much difference between that and the 650 V-Strom!
The seat height is the same and performance is 96bhp. I get about 45-50mpg.

2 yrs later, I'm looking again. My riding style has changed and I want something different (lighter and with dual purpose capability).

I'm interested in what your partner buys. Please keep us posted :)

The F650GS twin is very economical, I regularly get over 225 miles from a 16 litre tank, the most I have ever managed is 168 with 10 miles of fuel remaining B) that was slow mountain twisties tho. On motorways riding 80mph - 110mph I usually get about 180 miles.
It's a very smooth ride and very confidence inspiring, my riding has improved 100% since getting my GS. It's so flickable and takes sharp bends with ease.
In Morocco I comfortably kept up with and quite often overtook and rode faster than the "big boys" I was riding with :woohoo:
I have also done some advanced riding....so it aint all the bike ;)

Thanks for adding that. The F650GS has been on and off my list of suitable bikes several times. I once had a test ride on one but now I cannot remember whether it was the new twin or the old single. I'll add it back to my list & find a bike to test ride :)

My other 1/2 has a newer shape 600 Hornet, it's an utterly fantastic bike & very competant allrounder with better wind protection/lower wind noise than many faired bikes! Couple that with low seat hight, low weight and superb build quality, the rear grab handles make it a doddle to strap a big roll bag to the pillion seat too :)

Having said that nothing beats a test ride
