I am thinking of buying a trangia but first I was wondering can you use petrol or others fuels instead of methylated spirits. I have also discovered that the burner works with a kelly kettle. I an a big fan of the jet boil but it is not suitable for a 10 day trip I have planned

dont do petrol or you'll give yourself lead poisoning and more importantly, your food will taste awful! these days petrol needs to be pressurized to burn cleanly, its got too many additives.
trannys work with alcohol, ive run mine on vodka ok. ive got the gas burner in it now which is loads better but obviously if you cant get gas........
practice making the cokecan burner, in an emergency it makes a good replacement for the brass trangia burner

As far as I know, you can only use meths or equivalent in the basic stove. There are additional burners you can buy which allow you to use petrol or gas.

Dubber,
I don't think you can use anything except meths with the Trangia (certainly not petrol, likely to explode & would taste like p*ss) unless you buy the attachment for gas. I find a small bottle gets me through a couple of weeks unless cooking a lot with it. You can also water it down to make it last longer.

Meths is best, but as Davsato notes they work well with alcohol, provided it is concentrated enough (not much point in putting a can of stella in there  ).

just been looking at the petrol burner attachment. God how much but probably worth it.

yes, agree with that. but on the other hand, they do a great simmer function   :laugh:Mike54 wrote:I know some people like them but bugger me they take hours to actually cook anything.
the gas burner goes like a rocket, way overpowered but it sure saves on gas, its only running for 3 minutes
