Bikes are relatively easy and clean to get at and service for regular items. However, modern cars are covered in plastic and are a right PITA to access and even do the most minor of things. Who likes lying on damp gravel and crawling underneath to access oil drain plugs etc. I will do brakes and some suspension work. I manage most things on my bikes and very, very rarely have to have a workshop do some stuff--mainly due to specialist tools , and particularly electronic diagnosis on modern stuff. I recently changed the front fork bushes and seals on my low mileage Burgman 400 (it had apparently been done just before I purchased it, but I'm not sure about the seal quality as they still weeped slightly). The biggest issue was access--plastic fantastic again!!!!--and all the front fairing had to come off for fork access. The Haynes manual wasn't very good BUT I found a great You Tube video (Mitch's scooter stuff)--and that really helped to locate all the fasteners and screws (the guy was born deaf so everything is visual prepared with great care). I do have a garage workshop so even at this time of year I could get on with it. The real answer IMO is to do your research first before you even lift a spanner--none of us should assume that we know everything--and I'm an old, and well qualified mechanical engineer.

Greetings,

My first foreman had the following letters painted over the door to his office "RTFM"

When I went to go in and ask what to do, he simply pointed to the acronym and smiled!

"Read The F*****G Manual" :!:

I only really understand pictures and not words, which I bore in mind when later in life I entered teaching. Lots of photos taken and 'cut away' models made, I also learned more too  Look out for the old Eagle comic which had such pictures across the centre pages, brilliant.

When I was young my dad bought me a little book where every page was a cut away drawing of a different device. It was inspiring. I wish I still had it.
And now, Harry, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.

Whats the saying--a Picture saves a thousand words? It is sooooo difficult to describe procedures or operations in words only--and it takes great skill to get the subject matter over in simple language. There is also another sort of saying--the better a subject is understood by the teacher the simpler they make it seem.

I have just purchased what I would consider a massively complex piece of equipment , it's a hardware interface for controlling software. Gotta tell you I would never have gone for it had the supporting user files not been visual and so exceptionally clear. Pictures, Gimmie pictures !

different bikes have different complexities, these days, and you won't know them until you find out the info !!

I suppose I shouldn't put someone down who is trying (video) but neither should someone use a learner to make a low point. Just saying.

He's done loads of videos with her (she's his girlfriend) and to me they always seem to treat each other with love and respect. She's physically brave on a motorcycle too.
