Action not possible. Start BMW APP.

Post by greggk47 »

Filled my tank on 2019 F850GS and went to reset my trip meters and was met with "Action not possible. Start you BMW APP." I don't have any electronics, GPS or media connected and never have. Called my dealer and they were clueless but wanted me to bring it in so they could work on it for $125/hr. Contacted BMW Motorrad and they deferred to the dealer. Anyone else seen this message and better yet how to fix it? To get to the dealer is 55 miles and a ferry ride away consuming a whole day. Don't mind it at 70F and sunny but 40's and rainy not so much fun.

can not say I am familiar with any of that but the first simple thing to try disconnect the battery for a few minutes and then retry, sorry can not be of more help than that.

Greetings,

I can not find anything relevant on the internet other than your own question.

I would agree with 'Bikenav' to disconnect and then reconnect the battery after about 10 minutes wait but I don't know if the bike would then need to be reset on an electronic module/computer?

Might seem simple but have you checked the basics such as oil and coolant levels, all of the lights, tyre pressures, earth leads, I honestly do not know what systems are on that model. Maybe another owner might come along soon, good luck but please let us know what you find to cure the problem.

This question probably needs to be asked on UKGSer, lots of knowledge on there but sadly there are some trolls too but I'm sure you'll find the answer there.

Doesn't this mean that a computer (laptop) must be plugged into the diagnostic socket on the bike? if it has one. Then the BMW app used to diagnose and fix?

Obviously, something has caused this sudden fault, and I would guess something simple like a low battery reading, faulty connection etc.

Dealers or specialists usually got this stuff, but I have read that people on here have done this procedure with their own bikes. but a lot of the 'good guys' have left, or are not participating here now because of brexit trolls? Possibly.

alternatively, the engine management system has seen the cost of petrol just put in .. and realised that this amount will not register significantly on the trip meter 8-)

Updated 3/15/2022 Went out yesterday to lube the chain and now I can get to the trip meters to reset. The "not possible" message is gone. I appreciate the suggestions from the readers but never got around to disconnecting the battery, as suggested. This is the second time this scenario has happened since I got the bike.
