Need help electrical suzuki gs850 1980.

Post by Adamski123 »

Hey guys, I'm new around here. I'm wondering if anyone could give me some advice on the electrical issues I have with my suzuki gs850 1980 trike. I put a new battery in and the starter solenoid went. So new solenoid and a relay. I'm having issues understanding how the previous owner wired the 5 pin relay up. Pin 30 and 85 has a jumper, 30 going to one side of the solenoid, 86 going to the switch on the solenoid and 87a to starter button. How ever my understanding this isn't how the relay works? I've tried it and can't get it to work wired like that.

Okay so not very professional  but this is how I'm going to try and wire the starter up.

I had a 850 back in the 80's , loved it. Would have another now if I could.
So why are you using a relay and a solenoid? Seems a bit redundant as you could just bring in the solenoid from the button? Which Is how the dirt bikes i work on work.

Those numbers are standard bosch wiring terminal numbers - all german ( and other) wiring diagrams use them . a quick google search for "Bosch terminal numbers " will bring up various responses including :https://www.autoelectricsupplies.co.uk/ ... ations.pdf All the terminal numbers can be read off . Briefly
30 live supply batt+
85 'actuator'
86 'start of winding'
87a 'first output'
basically if you put 12v across the terminals eventually 2 will make it click -they go to the starter button and earth
The other two connections are the circuit you are controlling

Relays seem to come in 2 types #1 12 oclock and 6 oclock are one pair 3 and 9
the other .
#2 12 oclock and 3 oclock are one pair 9 and 6 oclock the other.
Does this make any sense.

The relay and solenoid idea.
The starter takes 100,s of amps, we have not yet moved on to using phasma to making the solenoid redundent.
We need the solenoid as the relay contacts cannot carry that level of current.
So we are using the relay to operate the solenoid.

Thanks for the replies guys 🙏🙏 also thanks for the link for the relay layout. I'm sort of understanding the route I need to take for the relay. What I don't understand is how it ever worked with the way it was wired before I got it? I was hoping to have a go at it today but its been non stop raining

I operate the solenoid direct from the starter button.
No relay is needed.

The current that passes the starter button is only used to operate the relay inside the solenoid.
Low current.

The hisg current goes from battery via solenoid to starter engine.
Use thick wires !!!
And do not foget good earth

Good luck

You don't normally use a relay to operate the starter solenoid - the relay is probably to do with the sidestand switch, and can be bypassed. Below is the DRZ circuit diagram. Join Y/G to Y/B and off you go!

That looks like it was possibly an alarm relay, the jumped terminal are where the alarm was removed.

One of many diagrams

No relay included (besides the one in the selenoid)
