Anyone had a Fireblade ('99) ?

Post by soho »

I'm replacing one of my tired old work bike's and don't want to use one of my nice ones really. I've been offered a low milage blade that may fit the bill.
Any owners here with tips or stories to tell ?
(only downside I can see so far is the shell suit colour of it !) ;)

Cheers Bob, ain't spoken to him for ages !

I was across the top of Bristol both Thursday and Yesterday to Cardiff again. I remember what you said about meeting up, but with the Pandemic I couldn't afford to catch your accent. I think it's still 14 days quarantine for that in London ? :D :D :D

Not had one myself but I knew a chap that had a ‘99 model (dark blue) that made it to 210,000 miles. He bought it at 2000 miles when it was 6 months old.

Another chap I knew had a 94 model that he sold at 165,000. That one he bought new.

Maybe that helps, maybe it doesn’t.

That's what I'm talkin about, my old 600 has done 170 plus thousand without even a sneeze. This blade has 30000 on it, and for the money I'll be happy if it gets to 100,000 with out major surgery and only consumables.

Thanx.

I took a 98 Blade (same as a 99) as a part-ex on a Gixxer once. It's the least desirable blade, because the R1 had just arrived and changed everything (like the blade did in 92). But the 98/99s have some of the nicest paint schemes in my opinion, and they are very comfortable. You can tour round Europe on a 99 Blade, no problem. Huge storage place at the rear. Stunters buy them quite a lot, so watch for that, and they are wheelie bikes so check head-race bearings obviously. Walk away from anything with frame damage (sometimes hidden by stickers). Regulator and stator issues are cheap to fix, and so is the cam-chain tensioner, which can need replacing. It really benefits from a can, a good air filter, dyno time and carb adjustments - makes a big difference to the thrust curve and the whole fueling feels so much better when it's sorted. You can fit a 17 inch wheel from later bikes (2000 onwards FI bikes) with a bit of fiddling and spacers, which helps handling but not vital. They love fresh tyres and hate worn ones. They can do fairly big mileages and they're well built and nice to ride. Good bike.

I had a 1 year old1998 cbr900,same bike just different colours.
I liked it. 3 years and no problems.
The 16" front wheel makes for quick handling.
I only really noticed it when I rode the 2000 model and it seamed more progressive with the 17" front, but the smaller fairing and average fuel injection wasn't appealing to me then.

i had an RRS , loved it. toured on it and found it quite comfy. sold it with 60,000mls on it to a friend who later sold it to one of his mates with 90,000mls on it. its still going strong at last count. change oil at 3,000mls and it'll run for ever. voltage reg/rect failure common issue. would i have another...yes.
