My tdm running bad.

Post by Lord Reeper »

Hello there just got myself a 1992 tdm 850. . It ran rough just after I got it. I replaced reg rec. And stripped replaced carb seals and emulsion tubes . It runs a lot better when I rev it up. But wont tickover. as if drawing to much air. I have reduced the large breather pipes at top of carbs to narrower . Any ideas

Could be carbs out of balance, holed air filter or airbox connection, sticky flaps, bad / contaminated fuel?

Contact the previous owner, OK they may deny all knowledge, but they may be able to help if has occurred before.

Is there a specialist tedium forum?

Carpe tdm is a great tdm site, full of information.
I have a 900 an it's been a great bike, good luck sorting it out.

Those TDM's were built to last forever.
Well its either carburation or ignition.
Maybe need to put the jets through the ultrasonic cleaner if you believe that the Carbs are properly balanced.
Not sure what the electronic ignition is like in terms of reliability on those models.
If all else fails, you could always go into your local Yamaha dealer and speak to one of the mechanics, he may just come up with a comment that solves your problem.

Great bikes.
They were known for problems if the carbs are not balanced accurately, there is a linkage between the two carbs and from memory the haynes manual tells how to set them up.
Carpetdm is also a great font of knowledge.

If you’re in the East Midlands the mechanic at Webbs in Lincoln (Yamaha dealer) is excellent.

Was thinking that it could be an air around the caburator area (rubbers getting hard), maybe trying spraying with some soapy water or similar, you might be lucky.
