Correct so does water come from the ground but it ain't the same when it comes out the tap..... The Internet is full of anicdotes about fuel quality... Folks use what they want. But higher quality fuel does give a better burn so more power and better mpg...

Bit like a std and remapped engine... Same product tweaked..

They do, but a variety of substances are added to the product when it is loaded into the road tanker...ask any road fuel delivery driver. In fact, you get a huge variety of fuels from the same refinery: petrol, diesel, LPG etc; then each product is 'tweaked' with additives etc.

It was a few decades ago now, but one of the major supermarkets put some petrol on sale that killed the lambada sensors in every car it was put in. The parts chain rapidly sold out of replacement sensors and lots of cars were off the road for weeks.

That was around 12 years ago in 2007, I only know because a mate's car was affected by it. The repair bill was huge. I think they said the fuel was contaminated during delivery but the rumour was that it had some nasty additive in it...who knows...

I find that my Guzzi Cali III will run on any old crap and the only thing that makes a real difference is the higher octane super unleaded you get in Europe. My Himalayan runs great and gets about another five mpg on Sainsbury’s super unleaded, normal Sainsbury’s or Shell is about the same. Esso normal unleaded has given me the worst mpg and cold running.
I am not sure but I believe that it depends where you are in the country which refinery your fuel comes from.
The best fuel that I have used in the Himalayan was Repsol super unleaded 98 octane in Spain. I got 90mpg instead of my more usual 85.

I use BP Ulitimate in the bikes and have the BP card, never any problem.
I can see this sort of thing getting worse in the future as they try to phase out petrol and force us use battery powered cars, which have a very limited life.
Have you tried to but a mobile lately with a replaceable battery, its just a another rip off.

Good thread this. Back in the 90’s there was a big hooha on supermarket fuel, a mechanic I knew said it’s all about the storage facility and storage duration. Supermarkets were getting deals on said fuel and coining in the difference. Loads of cars at the time ( West & mid Cornwall ) we’re getting affected. I never fill up at any of them now preferring the Shell 99 octane good stuff..!!

When supermarket petrol first became a thing, it was a loss-leader to draw people to the shop. I understand that the petrol was then being purchased on the Rotterdam spot market so may have been of variable source/quality.
