welding/battery?

Post by garyboy »

in the future I hope to do some welding on the bike
possibly pannier frames, rack, foot stand enlarger, etc etc

I would need to disconnect the battery

but is anything else needed to be isolated?
(electronics/ cpu/ efi/ ecu/ eec/ mps/ or wotever?) :D

or can I just isolate the battery and blast away  8-)

for safety unplug anything electronic--ECU etc as they might be separately earthed to the frame--and you are passing current through the frame.

Whenever welding anything with electrics attached. It a good idea to disconnect 1 terminal on the battery and I always add an extra earth cable to both the chassis and whatever I an welding to it. Make super sure you have the best contact on yer earths to metal. You dont want the current tracking across other contacts/wires. HTHY

Bear in mind that welding can distort both the component you are adding and the component you are adding it to. Oldschool hand-made motorcycle frames were constructed in massively strong jigs for this reason.

Watch out also for embrittlement in the areas adjacent to the weld.

Disconnect the battery.
Keep your earth as close to the weld area as possible. Should be no problems then.
Just think about where you put the earth as the current will take the path of least
resistance.
If there are connectors between where you are welding and the earth disconnect them.
