Heated Grips

Post by qcnr »

Anybody any experience of these?
Slightly pricey maybe, But allows you to fit your favorite grips with no problems.

I like the idea of being able to use your choice of grip, but wonder about the wires...do you have to drill a hole in your bars?

edit: just read the manual, 8mm hole needed, not too sure about that

I wonder if 2 x 4mm holes would do
as 8mm gotta weaken the bars?

Not to be a knocker but I don't like the 8mm hole idea either although you do drill for perches but to keep the install neat the hole would be pretty close to the clamps or bends? Between the clamps would work mind same as the customs? Also would the slug not just heat up the bars, perches and end weights first as they are more conductive ? Hey heated mirrors, good plan.

From section 2B of the installation instructions: "Alternatively, drill a 3 – 5 mm hole on each side of the handlebar underneath the switch units in order to route the connection cables into these." Then they suggest feeding the heater wires down the sheath for the switch wiring.

However, I doubt whether the 8mm hole will be much of a problem. It is located between the handlebar mounting clamps, so it is a part of the bars which is well supported and least liable to be stressed. An 8mm hole in one the handle bar bends might be a problem, but I doubt whether a central hole will be.

Also, the 8mm hole allows a proper grommet to be used, whereas they suggest a piece of heat shrink tube in the 3-5mm holes. They also suggest carefully deburring the hole using e.g. a Dremel.

I have used something similar, but quite a bit cheaper. Not sure of the brand name but they were made in New Zealand and supplied by Bob Porecha a Classic BMW specialist in South London. I have fitted them to various bikes and had no issues with the holes weakening the bars. Probably less chance of them weakening the bars than the wires from the more traditional heated grips getting damaged in an accident. They work best with shorter bars and hand guards or fairings. Not so great on my California whose bars are about five feet long.

From a structural point of view I can't see the 8mm hole being a problem. The loads on the bar are greatest at the
ends and at the points where they are clamped. The part in between will hardly be seeing any loads or forces.

Point of order, Loads are actually less at the ends of the bar, the same applies to the tip of any cantilevered component that is subjected to a force at it's end at right angle or oblique, but this allowed for in the design which will have more strength built in at the fixing point.
In the case of Bars they are thicker/larger diameter in that area
