rubber well nuts as side case support?

Post by Tramp »

Okay ine got pannier frames on my xt660z now im adding some ally plate to shield from hot silencer the pannier frame is hollow with some 6mm holes dtilled in which have rubber bungs in, so idea was renove rubber bungs and then insert the rubber captive nut thjngy :o thats used to hold fairing screens on bikes...

As the alloy plates are 6mm thick and only about a4 size and are used purely xomething for soft bags to rest against...would 5 per side be enough to hold and maybe the rubber would act as antivibration points...

Cheers

Depends where the 5 holes are, if there evenly spaced then should be fine, as you're only holding the plate on, I would use a large Penny type washer to spread the pressure.

I'm not sure about this. I believe that the plastic wellness are used as sacrificial mountings for fairings because they break easily - in the event of an accident, the bolts break or the walnuts pull out of their mountings and so save the fairing panels from breaking. They might work well, or they might be too fragile.

As they are only holding the heat shield plate, I would go ahead but keep an eye on them afterwards. If one of them breaks, assume the others are likely to follow suit, and change to something more robust.

They've lasted well russ, have done 20000km numerous trips, including epic Morocco trip, pyrenees, etc, they fit inside the tubing, h&b frames. Good luck bud. :D

Greetings,

In the past I have found 'Mikalor' rubber lined P clips to be a good standard, used in conjunction with stainless fasteners, large penny washers and nyloc nuts.

What's the distance between the frames and the exhaust, Russ? Because the 950 is similar and I just used a cake tray mesh held on with cable ties to keep the bags off the pipe. Cost about £2  I think the clearance was about 4 inches which is sufficient. Weighs FA too
