The law in the UK was recently clarified, using it to perform other functions than sending / receiving information and it isn't now an offence, where to use it to send a text message etc is. But they could still try and do you for careless / dangerous driving, but that's true for a dedicated sat-nav:

I used an Lenovo tab 10" on my CCM GP450 last year for the TET and ran Locuspro, with no problems. Now have PR7 with Samsung Tablet and have loaded this with Memory Map for UK. Both are Android operating systems. Next up is to load the TET app with Maps.

I see no real reason for purchasing a GPS specifc device (and the cost associated with them), when you have a tablet.
