chain tool..?

Post by Tramp »

Right just fucked up a new did 525 soft link as my hein geirike splitter joiner has decided its gad enough abuse even with the help of the grinder :o ...

So i need a new one , recommendations for one that pushes pins out and pushed plates on then spreads the mushroom heads on 520 and 525 chains....never has this probkem with split links lol.

Dont want a cheap and nasty or would be great to just get so e new pins and a 525 plate for the hein tool as its great otherwise...

I’ve used a DID one for a few years without any bother, not cheap though, but built to last.

On the very rare occasion that I need to rivet a soft link I leave it to my local dealer. I'm 95% split links on my bikes. To REMOVE a soft link delicate grinding the pins flat will then allow an old school type Reynolds link extractor to work easily. I also have a very small modified G clamp (ground to almost a pin on the screw bit), which will push the plates together against the O rings and still allow a link clip to be pushed on(and there is also a tool for that!). On a long trip I carry a spare length of chain, some split links, a SMALL pin extractor AND a 12v Dremel type tool (powered off the battery) to allow me to grind pins down if I need to insert a few links. It also comes in handy for removing stubborn hardware etc and really doesn't take up much room--never like getting stuck for simple failures!
