A little birdy told me you're one step away from inventing perpetual motion and being the saviour of the universe. All you have to do is get rid of the need for petrol.

No dog related advice but...

The ignition on that, if it is CDI, will stop by putting the feed to earth, one of the contacts on the switch will earth the feed wire when the switch is off, the same with the kill switch, with the ignition switch NOT earthing the feed but the kill switch doing so that points to a worn ignition switch contact.
Since it's worn it may also be making intermittent contact even in the on position because of all the wear and dirt etc and this would cause the problems with stopping etc, so I'd replace the ignition switch first.
You can also test this by finding the kill switch wire going into the ignition switch and disconnect it, if it all works as normal then you've found your problem.

I am away from the garage for the next few days but when I get to twiddling the screwdrivers and sparking things again I will try to photo the offending item/s for others to be aware of.

One problem is the lack of a coherent wiring diagram that you can actually read. The one in the owner's manual is useless but Lampkin are trying to get me a clearer one, the factory is closed this week.

Thanks for the kind offer of a loan of parts, I may take you up on that if I can not isolate the fault by other means.

Found out whilst setting up my scotoiler on my KTM up on the centre stand, in gear and engine running.
Remove key from ignition and the engine doesn’t stop!

So, even though you have neutral light maybe feed back to the CDI for neutral?

Hello again,

Next door folks have gone away for a few days and taken their retriever dog too so I was totally on my own trying to sort things today

Voltage measured and connectors of the wiring and ignition switch;

I deduce therefore that the principal feed to the switch is the 'Red' wire from the loom which connected to the Orange wire from the switch and that the Green out from the switch feeds all other circuits such as indicators, lights, etc. Searching around I found a single loose White/black trace wire which had no end connector terminal and no voltage but it traces back to the ECU. So I presumed that this might be the ‘trigger’ feed to switch off the ECU and ignition.

I connected the found loose wire to the White/red wire from the ignition switch. With the ignition on and with the engine running I could not measure any voltage at this point but turning the ignition switch to 'off' position the ‘system’ shuts off normally and the engine stops running. I presume therefore that the ‘disconnected’ wire was the problem.

I don’t understand the purpose of the Blue wire from the switch as I cannot trace any voltage from it at all and it only connects to earth.

The switch and lock assembly bolts at the headstock can be undone with a hammer and a centre punch. Take care prising the switch out of its holder though as the internal connector can drop out (ask me how I know). The end of the lock rod has a ’T’ shape which fits into the switch's rotating contact set.

Looking at the loom I am obviously not the first person to investigate electrical problems! The original petrol tap level switch had been disconnected when I bought the bike, I replaced the original tap with one that has a reserve position which is far more reliable.

Still needs testing on a run but a big thank you to everybody and their pets who offered help and provided suggestions.
