Battery Conditioner Problem

Post by Nick_2112 »

Quick battery conditioner question.

I bought a new battery conditioner about six months ago, its the same model as one I already have that is 20yrs old.

I bought the new one as the original one had been so good and I have 2 bikes.

Problem is, the old one will maintain the battery in my Tiger at 13.8v and then turn off.
If I then plug the new one into the same Tiger (still 13.8v) it shows it to be conditioning ie. the battery needs a slight charge, I go back 24H later and it is still charging on the new conditioner even though it was at 13.8v when I put it on 24H ago.

When i now check the Tiger batterys voltage it is 13.4v.

So the new conditioner is loosing 0.4v over 24H but also is constantly charging, when the old one was up to 13.8v and turned off ie. fully charged.

Would you guys say the new charger is faulty?
Bit long winded, hope it makes sense.

Greetings Nick,

Unfortunately the black art of 'elec-trickery' is not my specialist subject but I would have thought that the variation is within manufacturing tolerances for a mass produced product. However, perhaps a 'phone call to the manufacturer or importer might be worthwhile for double checking and piece of mind.

I replaced my old Optimate 4 for an Optimate 6, the current readings are slightly different but still within what I think are acceptable tolerances, different models and production but still working just fine.

TTFN

Hugh.

Thanks for the reply Hugh.

The thing I don't understand is: both conditioners are the same make & model, only 20 years apart in age.

The old one takes the battery up to 13.8v and then shuts off, as it's supposed to.

When the new one is connected when the battery is at 13.8v, it's constantly charging ie. doesn't shut off. I thought it would.

When I check the battery voltage after a few days on the new one it's 13.4v, when it was 13.8v when I plugged in the new one?

It's not one year old until Nov 18, so I guess i'll contact them.

I just wanted some views/opinions incase i've missed something obvious, cheers.
