Well getting ready to go out on Sunday I was checking over the Beta when both fuses blew
Replaced them and they blew too 
So seat, tank and side panels off the check the wiring, the loom sheathing looked rather tired but no obvious problems. Anyway decided to strip the outer cover off and found cracks in the protective cover of the wires going up to the ignition switch, so rewired that section back to the fuse box and all then seemed ok.
Put everything back together again and figured I had better just give it another check before calling it a night after three hours of work. Puff
the fuses blew again. Enough, look at it again in the morning 
Another disconnect of all of the plugs and slowly reconnecting one part of the loom at a time. Still nothing to see but running my hand around the cables at the headstock I noted that the one section of a loom felt to have been crushed. Slit the outer covering and there I found the damaged wires which feed the pilot light and headlight.

I hate electrics and the air in the garage is still 'blue'. Eight blown fuses and a good 7 hours of head scratching tedious work.
