A tablet would do or a half decent phone ideally with base camp

Yes either a basic desktop pc , laptop/netbook will do fine. As you've discovered you essentially need that usb port which Apple in their wisdom seems to think is so passé  .
Basecamp isn't essential, it's a free software from Garmin, but can be useful for route planning and editing tracks etc. It's available for windows or mac don't think will be compatable with the android os that most tablets use.

Cheap laptop and install Basecamp on it. Easy enough to manage and transfer gpx files to the Garmin then.

Can you load the gpx on to a memory card and put it into the garmin?

I bought a cheap windows tablet and put Basecamp on it. Then you can take it away with you and make alterations to the route or download new routes while you are away.
