New trailers and the law

Post by Old Git Ray »

Has anyone had to go through the new VOSA IVA system to get a registration plate for a new, home made trailer yet ?

I ask as my old one is creaking and I need a beefier one. I wondered if anyone had gone through the process yet and could shed any light on the pain or otherwise.

For those that don't know, from 2013/14 it has been law to have a VIN style plate, with all the permissible axle weights etc, attached to the nearside of all new trailers.

I would have trouble diguising it as an old one. Aside from this I would want to take it abroad and they have been plated since forever so it would be more difficult to bluff the cops.

I think its only trailers built after that date, older ones don't need a vin plate, but has to have brakes if over 750Kg GVW
