So here we go ........i ride hard and do like the odd rest , normally with the bike on top of me but how often would be a good average oil / filter change in kms or hrs

Re: EXC 400
Phil you're going to get a load of different answers/ opinions on this....but you knew that right
I've got the same rfs engine in my '07 Beta. Manual recomends 15 h for oil and filter but thats for racing. I do around 20 -30 hrs. Oil always comes out very clean, I do the 2 'crepines' ( gauze screw in filters) in the side /bottom of engine but yet to see any sign of crud swarf on them but a good idea none the less as gives a good visual sign if anything nasty is happening. There's the 2 paper filters too obviously. I wouldn't get too paranoid I don't think these particular KTM engines are too delicate but given they only take 1.2 litres of oil no point scrimping on changes too much either....even for a tight northern monkey like you
Careful not to overfill with oil, just to the bottom of sight glass is considered fine. Also careful removing the crepines and sump plug, casings arent too tough so don't overtighten, torque settings for all will be in your manual. Leave the favourite big hammer in its box !!

Re: EXC 400
Cheers Nick , thats about every 450 / 500 kms for round here .....80 /100 kms in 5hrs ....................best buy filters in bulk !! the guy i got it off gave me nearly 5lts of 10/60 oil that he'd been using !! seems a bit harsh ,whats wrong with 10/40 ?

Re: EXC 400
Or use the hour meter function if you have one, mine didn't so I stuck cheapo unit on it to keep track, you might only do 80 -100 km in 5 hours but doubt your motor is running all the time....you have to wait for nobs to catch up
Handbook on Beta recommends 15/50 oil. I use 10/50 fully synthetic from super U , own brand stuff but has all the appropriate numbers and only 7,50 euro for 2 litres., I'm no oil brand snob
Mind you my DRZ has died, terminal engine disease , so not sure you want to take any advice off me

Re: EXC 400
What he said careful putting the gauze filters back in it is easy to crush them. The secret of a happy KTM is frequent new oil and air filters. I tend to change oil after three good days of trail riding but air could be every day especially in dust.
The secret of a long life is knowing when its time to go.

Re: EXC 400
In my KTM manual it recommends that you use Motorex PowerSynt !0/50, that's what and I'm happy with that as that's what I used to use in both of my 950's.
There doesn't seem to be a recommended period for oil changes in the manual.

Phil have a gander through here you might find a manual to help.
https://www.carlsalter.com/motorcycle-manuals.asp
Or pop across the border and get a Manuel to help
