After the last little snowfall, I drove my daughters little Citroen C1 and the tyres were crap despite having good tread depth so, decided to get them changed and put winter tyres on it. Now with a good snowfall what a difference with the winter tyres, I live up a steep hill with no run up and the little C1 walks up no problem. Well impressed

Re: praising snow tyres
Greetings,
We had a spare set of winter tyres on my wife's Ford KA and that was the same. I am currently using Michelin Cross Climate on my Kia Ceed SW and they are much quieter than the original Michelin tyres and provide excellent grip all year. Wear rate does not seem any different but the comfort and drivability really are.
The difference is not so much the tread pattern but the fact that the sidewalls and tread remain far more supple in the cold weather. Many years back the Michelins on my Montego used to freeze with a flat surface and rattle the doors in their aperture for about three miles before they warmed up, just as I got to work

Hugh.
PS my KA tyres and wheels are on sale on eBay

Re: praising snow tyres
Kleibar Quadraxer Four-Seasons for me...fitted all year round.
No more expensive than other mid-market tyres, but vastly superior in the cold and wet.
If you are choosing Winter tyres then the Three Peaks Mountain Snowflake (TPMSF) or 'Alpine' logo on the side of the tyre means that it has actually passed a standard test where it has to beat a 'reference' tyre on an ice/snow track. The old M + S marking is just an indication of suitability from the tyre manufacturer, and is a bit wishy-washy by comparison.
Modern Winter tyres have a tread compound which is rich in silica, and stays flexible at temperatures below + 7 C, which is when conventional tyres start to stiffen up. Grip on ice is helped by there being many more 'sipes' (thin slits) in the tread pattern. These wipe slippery melt water off ice.
I drove through the 'Beast from the East' snowfall, and there was no feeling that the road was slippery at all.
I live in the country, the roads round here never get treated and are covered in mud. These tyres are like a 'poor man's 4x4'!

Re: praising snow tyres
I had to resort to using my snow socks on the Yeti this morning. My back street was a foot deep in snow and it's uphill. No way with a DSG box could I get out without them.
Knackered one of them though, a hole worn in it. I had to drive part of the way to work, 8 miles, with little or no snow, bu the road conditions kept changing so I kept them on.

Re: praising snow tyres
No problem on my run home from work yesterday. I only got 24k miles out of the OEM Michelins so I think I will just be leaving the winter tyres on all year round from now.
