helicoil and drillout costs?

Post by Tramp »

okay....the ccm started but pucked oil  ..so restripped down and two snapped bolts in the barrel :o ....need a drill out and heliciol into alloy...m6 bolt threads std ...

so what are the likely costs if i hand over the barrel to a enginerring workshop......ive only got a variable speed house drill so maybe time for the experts :D ...the snapped bolts are flush with top of Barrel about 5mm deep.

Can you weld?

Weld nuts onto what's left of the studs and undo the bolts from the head that way.

Drilling into steel bolts can be a bit dodgy if the drill slips or the bit snaps off.

Sorry to hear that...

I've just had an excellent result using a Clarke rethread kit on my Pampera (buy from Machine Mart or on line, you only need buy the thread, tap and drill for the fastener you are replacing).

The big challenge will be to drill the holes cleanly and accurately. Do you know anyone with a pillar drill?

Good luck

Just because they're snapped does not mean you have to rethread. Drill them out. Start by pock marking the bolt using a centre punch right in the middle of the snapped bolt. Then using a fairly small drill carefully drill through the bolt. Go up a size in drill and do again. Continue until you have almost got all the bolt out. If you are lucky the hole with be central but if it's not then stop before you get to thread of barrel. You should now be able to tap out the remaining bit of bolt. Once most of it is drilled out it deemed to lose it's grip on the main object and taps out easy.

Won't easy out work.
You don't have to be precise with first drill just deep enough to get the easy out bits to bite in.

Black pig, arm bands and wetsuit all ready for next Sunday :geek: :D :D :D
Might need to get a snorkel with the rain forecast this week

I've never got an easy-out to work...screwing them in seems to force the stud to expand and wedge itself tighter into the female hole (sorry, that sounds a bit rude  )

I'm with Billy, weld some nuts on the ends , let them cool, penetrating oil and they usually come out easily.
