Re: Loyalty or sense?
One of the problems more technology based bikes will come across in some years due to the complexity and changes in models is the complete lack of some parts or software. One advantage of having an older bike without electronically controlled suspension, software patched firmware or software locked components.

Re: Loyalty or sense?
On this occasion I've gone with loyalty and the Pan is back on the road with a recon alternator. I don't have a pot of cash to buy a different bike and due to other things in life I can't commit to an ongoing payment deal to finance one either so I'm back in my favourite bike seat. I'll soon be doing less miles a week on it so I'm figuring the bike will get a semi-retirement (easier life) and be there if / when I get the chance to do a bigger trip.

You're a very sensible man.
We need to meet up soon. I need to commission some leather work.

Re: Loyalty or sense?
the ST1100 is a great bike, as long as you plan ahead for the bends (weight), and is very stable at high speeds and on reasonable bends. Rides lovely. .. just watch out for the rust and corrosion, especially if left for a while and covered with a tarp
You need to keep on top of it, in more ways than one
