URGENT-Electrical charging issue - Help needed by novice in Guildford

Post by SteveR »

Earlier this week, my nephew Sam purchased from a guy in West Midlands, what was my old Transalp 650* The bike had stood for 15-18 months stored dry and clean, but no optimate. We agreed a deal, but after checking it over at home and it flying through the MOT, the bike stopped on the way back to London from Shropshire. Flat battery and the AA guy who collected him, diagnosed a duff Reg/Rec. I asked for the advice of an old mate on the xrv forum , and he though it was more likely to be a corroded wiring issue, and I passed on his ideas and thoughts. I am not sure if Sam checked the wiring that he was advised on...

Sam installed a new RR and a new battery yesterday, and I have just heard that it has stopped again on him, same issue of dead battery. I am unsure if the battery is fried, or just dead... I am gutted for him as its his first big bike and pushed his budget to the max. Not waht he needed when back to Uni next week...

I wanted to get the charging circuit tested with multimeter, but he was off before getting a chance to test things and I am in Shropshire. Is there anyone within hailing distance of GU23 6PU who could helpjust pop a meter on or recommend someone ASAP please??

I could take a look tomorrow after work if you want. I am certainly getting plenty of practice with a similar issue on my bike.
PM me if you still need help.

Thanks for the kind offer. I have not been online very much this week, so missed your post ... Doh.

Sam had a session with the Bike yesterday after getting hold of a multimeter and we had several whatsapp and phone call conversations!

Long and short is that the AA guy who helped the 2nd time, diagnosed a duff RR or wiring issues if Sam had done the rewire of the replacement RR incorrectly... The alternator was banging out power, but when I got him testing the system as a first test, there was only 12v at the battery engine off and engine running. Got and excellent troubleshooting flow chart from a guy over on the xrv forum and I belivieve Anive will be popping over to try and suss the issue over the weekend.. The Transalp, like many Honda's can suffer from a wiring connection block but that is supposed to be OK.

Im starting to go down a duff RR or a dodgy connection in the loom...

Cheers. Hopefully, it is that not a big problem... Not to need a specialist outfit ;-) Anive is going over to give him a hand tomorrow and if required solder the connection joint we think
may the issue..
