Tubliss in a KTM 690 enduro R? What tyres?

Post by DavidS »

Now my 690 is my one size fits all road and trail bike (apart from my classic Triumph), I am considering installing the Tubliss system when it comes to tyre replacement time.

That means local riding of maybe 50 to max 100 mixed road miles at up to 80mph or a mix of trail and road riding for trailriding days.

Any real world views on using them and any potential problems with that amount of road use.

Currently I have MT21s, fitted by the original owner, and they seem ok enough for the Sussex slurry we get in winter as the bike just chuggs through it with 15psi in the rear, 12 in the front, but they obviously don't clear as well as my old Mitas Xtreme but they would not be practical for the road use. Not sure how they will fare in North Wales in late May but they may need changing by then anyway and that is a rocky one-off trip (for now) and I survived with HD tubes in my old 400EXC the last couple of times I went there. I am no David Knight, more of a plodder/bimbler so no heroic riding style.

I am trying to avoid buying SM rims as I doubt I would ever change them unless I was doing a dedicated longer road trip and then I would just buy 21/18 dual sport tyres. I actually enjoy the slight squirrelling of knobblies on the road, weird as it may seem.

Any suggestions that won't leave me annoyed or replacing clapped out tyres every few months?

Hi David

I always ran Michelin Comp 4 front and AC10 rear with good results. Many hate the AC10 but I found it worked well on the 690.

I did try a Mitas XT 754 (rear) as well. It was great in the sand or sloppy mud, lasted for ages but was prone to sideways movement on the road or slippy clay type surfaces.

Oh and the 690 has a wider rim on the rear that a EXC, check that Tubliss will work?

Thanks Pete.
I am one of those AC10 haters. I had one for 20 miles on my 400 and it was awful - like riding on concrete tyres. Some keeny bought it for £25 :)
I was going to speak to Tubliss anyway but real world opinions are just as important IMO.
Mike Irving did run them in his 690. I'll give him a shout as well.

Ha bloody ha Keith.
I'm not that stupid.
Although I don't think mousses would ever be recommended for a 690.
You had better watch out as I might pop round and make you fit them.

Thanks - I had already emailed him.
I know he had a puncture in Thetford on our day out but he pumped it back up and got back to his warehouse ok...and that was a trip and a half from The Mildenhall garage in the encroaching October night.

Thanks but No, this dual use (not dual sport) thing is new to me so it's getting the balance of road and trail right, or as best as it can be.
We still hbe 80% road riding on trail riding days here in East Sussex. :(

I'll look them up.

Lots of us use them to tour europe etc..road and trail...excellent tyres....better than mt21 for sure...they may look extreme but are great unless.you ride fast then no nobbly will work for you..
