Re: 650 GS Dakar
rode one for 5.5k miles around New Zealand it ran faultlessly even though it had 90k kilometres on the clock, the only thing I know to is that the subframe bolts come undonegary b wrote:Hi all

Re: 650 GS Dakar
If they are anything like the standard F650GS then the charging system is just adequate.
Sat Nav & extra lights take it to the limit. Other than that I enjoyed mine. (F650GS)

Dakar has a 400watt alternator the standard GS has 280 watt IIRCvRSG60 wrote:If they are anythink like the standard F650GS then the charging system is just adequate.

Either way it's sufficient to run grips, heated jacket etc though aux halogen lamps as well would prob start to put the standard gs,s alternator under pressure.
Take a good look at the rear suspension linkage bearings ,bit pricey to refurb, and some of the inner bushes are no longer available

Re: 650 GS Dakar
I had thought there was no alternator on an F650 Single ? Isn't it a generator ? Looking at the parts diagram the part number for both the standard GS and Dakar looks to be the same - I've had no issues on the standard GS running heated grips , headlight , LED aux lights and a satnav
Agree on checking the rear suspension linkages and whilst your there the swinging arm bearings
Also worthwhile checking the steering head bearings
Other than that pretty bulletproof apart from the usual flaking BMW engine paint

Indeed , GS and Dakar both have : 12 11 7 687 776 GENERATOR 400WDutchgit wrote:Standard and Dakar GS have a 400W alternator, the G650X range have a 280W one.
The carbed 650 have a 280 one as well.
and G650X range all have : 12 31 7 699 394 GENERATOR 280W
Makes me wonder whether I could swap out the 280W version and replace it with a 400W version in my XChallenge ??

Doing a bit more digging looks like the way to go is to just upgrade the statornicholsonj2252 wrote:Indeed , GS and Dakar both have : 12 11 7 687 776 GENERATOR 400WDutchgit wrote:Standard and Dakar GS have a 400W alternator, the G650X range have a 280W one.

The F/G 650GS alternator is rated at 400w which is 14v 29A @7500 rpm, ie 29 x 14 = 406 watts
Since it is crankshaft driven the electrosport unit in the link below is stated as giving 300w @ 3500 rpm , so supposedly will give 480w @ 7500

Re: 650 GS Dakar
Two things I look for when buying 650GS's (have had a few now):
1) Waterpump. With the engine running and up to temperature, check under the left side of the engine casing where the two coolant pipes meet (this is your waterpump) - there should be a small 2mm hole visible. Check there is no water or oil leaking from that hole. If there is, the seals have failed and will need replacing.
Hole shown below:
2) Forks. Less likely to be an issue on the 2004+ bikes but check to see that the forks do NOT have SA-1 stamped into the inside of the fork leg near the brake disc. These were the forks that were known to have failures.
Stamping shown below: If the two points above are good.... happy riding! (thumbs)
